Essentially Ellington
May 7-11, 2010, the TJI Ellington big band directed by Doug Tidaback, was in New York City participating in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival organized by the Jazz at Lincoln Center organization lead by artistic director Wynton Marsalis. The Ellington band won the honor of being the #1 community high school big band in the United States in March and were their representing TJI, Tucson and all of Arizona. It was an experience of a lifetime for all who participated thanks to the generosity of all the financial donors and volunteer fundraisers. Twenty students traveled with TJI directors, Scott Black, Doug Tidaback and Brice Winston as well as chaperone Al Kuntz. In a survey of the 20 students attending, on a scale of 1 - 10 ranking a desire to return to NYC and the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, 19 gave 10 (or higher) and one gave a 9!
Wynton Marsalis was a perfect host. He was always on hand listening and encouraging students and making clear that we were all family to support and learn from each other. Our students had a jam session with the other students, a workshop with Victor Goines, master classes with members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, a dress reheasal and concert to attend by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and their own performance in the Rose Theater. In the evening we took trips to Smalls Jazz Club and to the Jazz Standard Club where we were all blown away by Mulgrew Miller Wing Span. We were inspired by the other bands, student soloists, Wynton Marsalis, jazz clubs, New York City itself and so much more. Enjoy the photos and comments from the Ellington students below!

I thought it was the best musical experience of my life. I think it was good to hear bands that swing. I thought Wynton's comments were very inspiring and useful for our future as jazz musicians and how to become more professional. ...become more of a family and not just a band. Jeremiah Kuntz
